Achilles Bay Beach Project Halted for Six Weeks To Allow for an Urgent

“The project to restore public access to Achilles Bay remains a priority and will be back on track as soon as possible,” said Minister of Public Works, Lt. Col. the Hon. David Burch, OBE (Mil), ED, JP, MP.

The Minister’s comments comes as the Ministry of Public Works updates the public on the status of a Government project to restore public access to Achilles Bay in St. George’s.

The public will recall the announcement in May that the 11-week construction project involving Smith Hauling and Excavating to commence repair works at the beach opposite Fort St. Catherine would start soon after.

However, upon excavation, the contractor found no solid rock beneath the steps to construct upon, and thus, the project had to be halted for a redesign.

It is now going back through the planning process, which is expected to take six weeks to complete. This delay will mean the beach will not be ready for public use in time for the Cup Match period as initially hoped.

Minister Burch added: “I know this news will disappoint people, especially residents in St. George’s who were eagerly looking forward to restoring access to the beach.

“I would ask that residents continue to be patient as we do everything we can to ensure that the new walkway access we are building meets all of the safety requirements and can be built to last for many years to come.”
