Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport: Parish Councils

The Ministry of Youth, Culture and Sport advised that it has been meeting with Parish Councils with the goal of granting them greater autonomy.

The Ministry has formed a Working Group with representatives from all Parish Councils to develop a roadmap to assist the Councils in operating as independent entities.

The Minister of Youth, Culture and Sport, Dr. the Hon. Ernest Peets said, “I am grateful to the Working Group participants for their time and commitment to the community.

“This initiative is part of the Government’s broader modernization goal, and we believe it will result in better governance and outcomes for the Councils.

“The role of Parish Councils is to serve their communities, and I believe that in the 21st century the Government doesn’t have to be involved at this level of community initiative. Rather than stifle Councils, we wish to see them innovate and flourish in the manner most beneficial to their individual, unique communities.

“I’m very pleased with the pace of this work. The Ministry and the Working Group aim to conclude their project to develop a roadmap that is suitable and realistic by the end of the year.”

Lastly, each of us has a role to play in stopping the spread of the coronavirus. Follow Public Health guidelines, wear a mask, practice good hand hygiene, maintain physical distance and download the WeHealth Bermuda app. Do the research, talk with your doctor and make an informed decision about getting the COVID-19 vaccine.
