Premier tribute to the late Georgia Congressman John Lewis

Premier, the Hon, E. David Burt today joined in the condolences and tributes paid to the late Georgia Congressman John Lewis who passed away earlier this weekend.

Premier Burt said: “John Lewis is rightly remembered as a constant voice for change and justice. Bermuda joins the world in celebrating the life and legacy of this tireless freedom fighter. As a congressman, John Lewis made time to meet with visiting Bermuda delegations and could be counted on to support us through the strong relationship we enjoy with the Congressional Black Caucus.

“This weekend also marked the passing of Rev. C. T. Vivian another civil rights pioneer who died in Atlanta aged 95.  Like John Lewis, Rev. Vivian was a leader in the fight for equality and justice and spent a lifetime on the frontline of these causes.”

Premier Burt concluded: “As these two men pass on, the world, more than ever, cannot ignore the principles that formed their lives work. The enduring nature of their call for justice and equality makes their legacies secure. On behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda, I express my sincere condolences to their families and to the people with whom and for whom they served.”
